Roofers in Huyton
Roofer & Builder carries out roof repairs, replacement roofs, roofline work and building projects in Huyton, Knowsley, including Roby, Page Moss and the surrounding estates. We are a family-run firm based in Maghull, reached via the M57, and we work for homeowners, landlords and businesses across the area.
Huyton is an old settlement that grew dramatically in the twentieth century, so its roofs range from Victorian slate on red brick and sandstone villas to the tiled roofs of large council estates and recent new builds. We assess each roof on its own merits, explain what we find in plain terms and provide a written quotation, so you can choose the right repair rather than being pushed towards a new roof.
Huyton's Housing Through the Years
The old village and Victorian suburb
Huyton appears in the Domesday Book, and its Grade II* listed parish church of St Michael dates largely from around the fourteenth century. After the railway arrived, large villas went up along Victoria Road and Huyton Church Road, now a conservation area. Built of red brick or local red sandstone, many have overhanging roofs on ornate brackets, covered in Welsh slate.
Roby
The Roby Conservation Area is made up mostly of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century buildings, from small vernacular cottages to large houses.
The overspill estates
In 1932 Liverpool bought a large area of the Earl of Derby’s Knowsley estate and went on to build four large estates in the north-west of Huyton-with-Roby: Fincham, Huyton Farm, Longview and Woolfall Heath. By 1950 most of Huyton’s residents had moved out from the city. These homes are typically brick semis and short terraces with tiled pitched roofs.
New homes
More recently, the North Huyton regeneration and developments off Knowsley Lane have added modern housing, usually with concrete tiled roofs and uPVC rooflines.
Common Roofing Problems in Huyton
On the older estate houses, some roofs date back close to a century and others have been re-covered since. Typical issues include:
- tired underlay and battens beneath the tiles, letting wind-driven rain reach the loft
- cracked or loose mortar ridges and verges, which should now be replaced with mechanically fixed systems
- chimney stacks with failed pointing or flaunching, including stacks that are no longer used but still need to be kept sound
- rotten timber fascias and leaking gutters, which our fascias, soffits and gutters service replaces
- failing felt roofs on porches, garages and extensions
On the Victorian villas, the usual problems are slipped slates, worn lead in valleys and around stacks, and deep timber eaves that need sound boards and brackets to stay weathertight.
Work in Huyton's Conservation Areas
Knowsley Council has designated conservation areas at Victoria Road and Huyton Church Road, around St Michael’s Church, and at Roby. The council’s appraisal for Victoria Road and Huyton Church Road highlights alterations such as re-roofing in modern materials and removing chimneys as the kind of change it can control. If your home is in one of these areas, speak to Knowsley’s planning team before changing roof materials or chimneys. We aim to repair like for like, reusing sound slate and matching new material to the old.
Building Work as Well as Roofing
If you are planning a rear extension, a loft conversion or a solid roof for an old conservatory, it helps to have one team that understands both the building and the roof. Roofer & Builder combines roofing and building skills, so on home extensions we take on the structure, steelwork and roof together and make sure the new roof ties properly into the existing one. Where brickwork or sandstone needs attention, our pointing service can help.
Emergency Roof Repairs in Huyton
Huyton is easy to reach from our base along the M57, and our emergency line on 0151 739 0669 is available 24/7. If tiles have come off, a flat roof is leaking or a chimney looks unsafe, ring and tell us what you can see. Where conditions are safe, the first visit is about stopping water getting in, and the permanent repair follows. If a storm caused the damage, photograph it and contact your insurer; a written report from us, with photos and a quote, can go in with your claim. See our emergency roofing page.

I had an issue with my flashing so had six roofers out to quote... John was the only one of the six who seemed genuine and trustworthy. This turned out to be the case... he did the work for a fair price, gave a proper invoice with breakdown of work, communicated well and left it all tidy. One of the firms who quoted said we needed a new roof (we didn't). It's so important to get several quotes and trust your gut. Thank you!Posted on Google![]()

Roofer and Builder have just completed gutter and rain pipe replacement around our whole house. They were a delight to deal with - friendly, helpful and very efficient. The work was done by a team of five in a single day and was to a high standard. They cleaned up carefully on completing the work. Maybe not the cheapest but probably the best.Posted on Google![]()

I cannot recommend John and his team enough. I had water leaking through my ceiling after a storm (3 days before Christmas!). John and his team were able to attend the same day. John was very knowledgable, assessed and explained the damage with photographs, and gave me repair options on other problems that were found. The team completed all the work the same day and really went above and beyond to do a great job rather than just a patch up. They've saved me a lot of stress and were pleasant and professional to deal with throughout. I will be contacting John again for future work.Posted on Google![]()

We had a problem that had been going on for years with various people trying to repair it and failing. Last December John came and repaired the roof. The materials used were 1st class, I have photos of every stage of the operation and after rain of biblical proportions I can now safely say that the roof is sound and my house is drying out. I can’t even begin to express my gratitude and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anybody. Thank you
FAQs
Roofing Questions from Huyton
Do you cover Roby, Page Moss and the rest of Huyton?
Yes. We cover the whole of Huyton-with-Roby, including Roby, Page Moss, Longview, Woolfall Heath and Huyton Quarry, as well as nearby Prescot, Whiston and Knowsley Village.
Should I replace fascias and gutters at the same time as roof work?
It often makes sense. If scaffolding is already up for roof repairs, renewing tired fascias, soffits and gutters at the same time avoids paying for access twice. If the existing roofline is still sound, though, we will tell you, and we will not recommend replacing it unless it needs it.
Can I replace my conservatory roof with a solid one?
Usually, yes. A solid, insulated roof can make a conservatory more usable through the year. Building Control will normally need to approve the work, and the existing frames and base have to be checked to make sure they will take the heavier roof. Our conservatory roof conversions page has more detail.
Is my house in a conservation area?
Much of Huyton is not, but homes around Victoria Road and Huyton Church Road, St Michael’s Church and Roby are. Knowsley Council publishes details of each conservation area, and its planning team can confirm whether your property is included or listed.
