Roofers in Netherton
Roofer & Builder repairs and replaces roofs in Netherton (L30), just the other side of Switch Island from our base in Maghull. We are a family-run roofing and building firm working for homeowners, landlords and businesses throughout Netherton and neighbouring Sefton Village and Thornton.
Much of Netherton was built in the 1950s and 1960s, so many of its roofs are now sixty or seventy years old. Some still have their original underlay, battens and mortar ridges, and that is often where problems begin. We inspect the roof properly, tell you what is worn and what is still sound, and give you a written quotation so you can decide what to do and when.
How Netherton Was Built
Netherton changed from a small village into a large residential area after the Second World War. With so much of Bootle’s housing destroyed by bombing, Bootle Borough Council built a large estate centred on Marian Square in the mid-1950s, and Lancashire County Council followed with the Sefton Estate in the mid-1960s. Netherton Village keeps its older core of private homes around the old village green, and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs through the middle of the area.
The result is a fairly consistent housing stock of two-storey semi-detached and terraced houses, with later private homes alongside, mostly under simple pitched roofs covered in tiles. Many have since gained porches, garages and single-storey extensions, often with flat roofs.
Typical Roof Problems on Post-War Homes
Ageing underlay and battens
Roofs of this age often have bitumen felt underlay that has become brittle or torn, especially near the eaves. Water that gets past a tile is then no longer carried safely into the gutter. Our article on roof felt failure under tiles explains the signs.
Mortar ridges and verges
Ridge tiles and verges bedded only in mortar crack and loosen over time, and are a frequent source of leaks and fallen tiles. See our ridge tile repairs.
Porch, garage and extension roofs
Older felt roofs on these additions tend to fail at the edges and around outlets, and standing water speeds that up.
Rooflines
Original timber fascias and soffits can rot, sag or come loose, while blocked gutters spill water down the walls. Our fascias, soffits and gutters service covers both.
Repair or Re-Roof?
On a roof that has been up for sixty or seventy years, the honest answer is not always a new roof. If the tiles are sound and the problems are limited to a ridge, a few slipped tiles or a failed flashing, a targeted repair is usually better value. If the underlay has failed across the roof and the battens are rotten, re-roofing becomes more sensible, and it gives you the chance to improve loft insulation and ventilation at the same time.
Bear in mind that replacing more than 25% of a roof’s covering counts as renovating a thermal element under the Building Regulations. Insulation usually has to be brought up to current standards where technically and economically feasible, and the work must be notified to Building Control. Our guide on whether you need Building Regulations to replace your roof explains more.

Hugh thanks to John and the team for an amazing velux transformation to our victorian house. The original skylight was dangerous and leaking but has been transformed with absolute detail and precision. We are delighted with the finish. I had an issue with my flashing so had six roofers out to quote... John was the only one of the six who seemed genuine and trustworthy. This turned out to be the case... he did the work for a fair price, gave a proper invoice with breakdown of work, communicated well and left it all tidy. One of the firms who quoted said we needed a new roof (we didn't). It's so important to get several quotes and trust your gut. Thank you!Posted on Google![]()

FAQs
Roofing Questions from Netherton
My house was built in the 1950s. Does it need a new roof?
Not necessarily. Age alone does not decide it; condition does. Many roofs of this period can be kept going with targeted repairs to ridges, flashings and individual tiles. If the underlay has broken down, battens are soft or tiles are failing across the roof, re-roofing is likely to be better value, and we will explain both options.
What is a dry ridge, and do I need one?
A dry ridge system fixes ridge tiles mechanically with clips, screws and a continuous seal instead of relying on mortar. Because BS 5534 now requires ridge and hip tiles to be mechanically fixed, a cracked or loose mortar ridge is usually replaced with a dry ridge or a mortar-bedded ridge that is also mechanically fixed. The choice often comes down to appearance and the tile type.
Can you replace the flat roof on my porch or garage?
Yes. Small flat roofs on porches, garages and extensions are common in Netherton, and we can repair or replace them in felt, EPDM rubber or GRP fibreglass. We check the deck underneath first, because a new covering laid over a rotten deck will not last.
