Roofers in Waterloo, Merseyside
Roofer & Builder provides roof repairs, replacement roofs and chimney work in Waterloo, the seaside district of Sefton between Crosby and Seaforth (L22). We are a family-run roofing and building firm based in Maghull, working on Waterloo’s terraces, villas, flats and shops.
Waterloo began as a Georgian resort known as Crosby Seabank, and the Royal Waterloo Hotel, opened in 1816 on the first anniversary of the battle, gave the place its name. Its seafront terraces and Victorian villas are among the most historic homes we cover, and many are listed or sit in conservation areas. That calls for careful, like-for-like work: inspect first, repair what can be repaired and explain the options clearly.
Waterloo's Seafront Terraces and Villas
Facing the sea along Marine Terrace, Adelaide Terrace, Beach Lawn and Marine Crescent are the terraces at the heart of the Waterloo Conservation Area, many of them Grade II listed. Inland, the Waterloo Park Conservation Area grew from the late 1850s around a planned group of large villas in Italianate and Gothic styles, along with Park Terrace, a three-storey red-brick terrace completed by the 1890s. A third, the Christ Church Conservation Area, also lies within Waterloo. Around South Road and the station are streets of Victorian and Edwardian houses.
Roofs here are mostly natural slate. Taller buildings bring tall chimney stacks, long runs of leadwork and roof details such as open eaves and verges that are part of each building’s character.
What the Sea Does to Waterloo Roofs
Waterloo looks straight out over Crosby Beach, where Antony Gormley’s Another Place figures stand on the sand, and towards the mouth of the Mersey. Nothing shelters the front rows of houses from the weather, and the usual results are:
- slates loosened or lifted by strong westerly winds, especially on upper slopes and at verges
- nails and fixings corroded by salt air, leading to slipped slates
- chimney stacks with eroded pointing, cracked flaunching and leaning pots, which our chimney stack repairs address
- split or lifted lead flashings around stacks, dormers and bays
- overflowing gutters and downpipes after heavy, wind-driven rain
Small defects on an exposed roof tend to grow, so a roof inspection after a stormy winter can head off a larger repair later.
Listed Buildings and Conservation Area Requirements
Sefton Council’s guidance for Waterloo Park asks that original roof lines are kept, that repairs use reclaimed or new materials to match the original covering, that features such as open eaves and verge details are retained, and that unsafe chimney stacks are rebuilt to their original height and design, with the pots replaced. Dormer windows need planning permission, and other changes to roofs and chimneys may too.
If your home is listed, listed building consent is normally needed for works that affect its character, which can include roof work. We will discuss materials and details with you at the quotation stage and point out anything to confirm with Sefton Council before work begins.
Access, Scaffolding and Larger Roofs
Three-storey terraces and big villas cannot be worked on safely from a ladder. Work at height needs planned access, normally scaffolding with edge protection in line with HSE guidance, and on a terrace that can mean agreeing access with neighbours. Where a large house is divided into flats, the freeholder or managing agent usually needs to be involved too.
Because we handle both roofing and building work, a job that combines roof repairs with chimney rebuilding, repointing or making good inside can be planned as one piece of work rather than several separate trades.
Emergency Roof Repairs in Waterloo
When a gale blows in off Liverpool Bay and a slate or ridge tile comes loose, or water starts coming through, call 0151 739 0669. Our emergency line is open 24/7. If it is safe to work, we carry out a temporary make-safe first and then return for a permanent repair in suitable materials.
For storm damage, photograph what you can see from the ground and let your insurer know. Many policies cover sudden storm damage rather than wear and tear, and we can supply a written report, photographs and a quote to help with your claim. Our storm damage roof repairs page explains more.

Hugh thanks to John and the team for an amazing velux transformation to our victorian house. The original skylight was dangerous and leaking but has been transformed with absolute detail and precision. We are delighted with the finish. The team were fantastic, going above and beyond to sort out the issues and left the house spotless! I would highly recommend them and would certainly call on them for any of our future needs. Carla was also great; kept us updated and informed from the quote through to the completion date.Posted on Google![]()

I had an issue with my flashing so had six roofers out to quote... John was the only one of the six who seemed genuine and trustworthy. This turned out to be the case... he did the work for a fair price, gave a proper invoice with breakdown of work, communicated well and left it all tidy. One of the firms who quoted said we needed a new roof (we didn't). It's so important to get several quotes and trust your gut. Thank you!Posted on Google![]()

FAQs
Roofing Questions from Waterloo
Which Waterloo do you cover?
We cover Waterloo in Merseyside, the L22 area of Sefton between Crosby and Seaforth, not Waterloo in London. It is a short drive from our base in Maghull, and we also cover neighbouring Crosby, Blundellsands, Seaforth, Litherland and Bootle.
How do I know if my house is in a conservation area?
Waterloo has three conservation areas: Waterloo, which covers the seafront terraces, Waterloo Park and Christ Church. Sefton Council publishes maps of each, and its planning team can confirm whether your property is included and whether it is listed.
Can you match the original slate on a period roof?
Usually, yes. Reclaimed slate or new natural slate of a similar size, colour and thickness can give a close match, and sound slates removed during a repair can often be reused. On a listed building or in a conservation area this matters, so we discuss materials at the quotation stage.
Is a roof inspection worthwhile if nothing is leaking yet?
On an exposed seafront roof, it often is. Loose slates, cracked flaunching and lifted lead usually show up before water gets inside, and putting them right early is normally simpler than dealing with a leak and the damage it causes indoors.
