Transform and Improve Your Living Space
Internal Refurbishment in Liverpool
Internal refurbishment can transform how your home looks, feels and functions. Whether you are modernising a single room, creating a more open-plan layout or undertaking a wider property renovation, Roofer & Builder provides internal refurbishment services across Liverpool, Merseyside, Wirral and surrounding areas.
Our experienced team undertakes a range of building and improvement work, including kitchen and bathroom refurbishment, internal alterations, structural openings, new rooms and associated finishing work.
Creating Better Spaces Within Your Home
A successful refurbishment should do more than update the appearance of a property. It should improve how the available space works for the people using it.
You may want to open up separate rooms to create a larger kitchen and living area, modernise an outdated bathroom, alter the internal layout or renovate several areas of the property at the same time.
Our team will discuss what you want to achieve, assess the existing space and explain the building work involved. Depending on the project, this may include structural alterations, new partitions, door openings, kitchen or bathroom work and associated internal finishes.
Getting the Order of Work Right
In short: a refurbishment runs most smoothly when roof leaks and damp are dealt with first, and all building and structural work is finished before anything decorative begins. Working out of sequence often means paying for the same job twice.
A typical sequence looks like this:
- Make the building sound: leaking roofs, failed gutters and damp walls are fixed before new finishes go in. If ceilings are stained, our roof leak repair service can trace the cause first.
- Strip out and structural work: old fittings come out, walls are removed or altered and any steelwork is installed.
- First fix: new pipework, cables, back boxes and stud partitions go in while walls and ceilings are still open.
- Plastering: walls and ceilings are boarded and plastered, then left to dry properly.
- Second fix and finishes: kitchen units, bathroom fittings, doors, skirting and sockets are fitted, leaving the rooms ready for decorating.
Building Regulations That Apply Indoors
Internal work rarely needs planning permission, but several parts of a refurbishment can still come under Building Regulations:
- Structure: removing or altering a load-bearing wall or chimney breast needs a structural design and Building Control approval. Our steelwork and structural calculations page explains the process.
- Fire safety: in a house with a floor more than 4.5 metres above ground, typically a three-storey house or one with a loft conversion, the hall and stairs normally form a protected escape route. Opening the hall into a living room can break that protection, so alternative measures must be agreed with Building Control first.
- Ventilation: a new kitchen, bathroom or en suite normally needs adequate extract ventilation.
- Electrics: notifiable electrical work, such as a new circuit or replacement consumer unit, must be done by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme or notified to Building Control.
- Drainage: moving a bathroom or adding a toilet can mean new drainage connections, which are also controlled.

We undertake alterations to internal layouts, including forming new rooms, changing door openings and creating spaces that better suit how the property is used.
Bi-Fold Doors and Larger Openings
New openings and bi-fold doors can improve the connection between internal living areas and outside spaces. The work required will depend on the existing wall, opening size and proposed installation.

I had an issue with my flashing so had six roofers out to quote... John was the only one of the six who seemed genuine and trustworthy. This turned out to be the case... he did the work for a fair price, gave a proper invoice with breakdown of work, communicated well and left it all tidy. One of the firms who quoted said we needed a new roof (we didn't). It's so important to get several quotes and trust your gut. Thank you!Posted on Google![]()

Roofer and Builder have just completed gutter and rain pipe replacement around our whole house. They were a delight to deal with - friendly, helpful and very efficient. The work was done by a team of five in a single day and was to a high standard. They cleaned up carefully on completing the work. Maybe not the cheapest but probably the best.Posted on Google![]()

I cannot recommend John and his team enough. I had water leaking through my ceiling after a storm (3 days before Christmas!). John and his team were able to attend the same day. John was very knowledgable, assessed and explained the damage with photographs, and gave me repair options on other problems that were found. The team completed all the work the same day and really went above and beyond to do a great job rather than just a patch up. They've saved me a lot of stress and were pleasant and professional to deal with throughout. I will be contacting John again for future work.Posted on Google![]()

Their helpful attitude and commitment to excellence make them the go-to choice for any roofing needs. I wholeheartedly recommend this roofer for their exceptional work and integrity.Posted on Google![]()

We had a problem that had been going on for years with various people trying to repair it and failing. Last December John came and repaired the roof. The materials used were 1st class, I have photos of every stage of the operation and after rain of biblical proportions I can now safely say that the roof is sound and my house is drying out. I can’t even begin to express my gratitude and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anybody. Thank you
FAQs
Internal Refurbishment FAQs
What types of internal refurbishment work do you undertake?
We undertake a range of internal building and refurbishment work, including kitchens, bathrooms, layout alterations, structural openings, new rooms and wider property renovations. The exact scope will depend on the individual project.
Can you remove an internal wall to create an open-plan space?
Potentially, yes. The wall must first be assessed to determine whether it is load-bearing and whether it performs another important function. Structural alterations may require Building Regulations approval and input from a structural engineer.
Do internal refurbishments need planning permission?
Many internal alterations to a house do not normally require planning permission. Different requirements can apply to listed buildings and some other properties, while structural work and certain other alterations may still require Building Regulations approval.
Can you refurbish several rooms as one project?
Yes. Several rooms can be refurbished as one project. Planning them together means the work can be carried out in a sensible order, from any structural or first-fix work through to plastering and finishing, so completed areas are not disturbed later.
Can internal refurbishment be combined with an extension or loft conversion?
Yes. Internal changes are often completed alongside a home extension or loft conversion, particularly where the new space affects the existing layout of the property.
How much does an internal refurbishment cost?
The cost depends on the size of the property, number of rooms, extent of structural alterations, materials and level of finishing required. We will assess the proposed work and provide a quotation based on the agreed scope.
Can we stay at home during an internal refurbishment?
Most people do, although it helps to plan for the disruption. If the kitchen is being replaced, a temporary space with a kettle, microwave and fridge makes a real difference. Sealing off rooms being worked on limits dust, and the work can often be ordered so that a bathroom stays usable. We talk through the likely stages before starting.
Do you refurbish rental properties between tenancies?
Yes. We work for landlords as well as homeowners, and the gap between tenancies is often the most practical time for disruptive work such as a new kitchen, bathroom or layout change. Agreeing the scope and quotation before the property is empty helps keep that gap short, and a roof inspection at the same stage can pick up any problems above the new finishes.
