Roofers in Walton, Liverpool
Roofer & Builder provides roof repairs, re-roofing and chimney work in Walton, Liverpool (L4 and L9), for homeowners, landlords and local businesses. We are a family-run roofing and building firm based in Maghull, a short drive down the A59 through Aintree.
Walton’s streets are lined with Victorian and Edwardian terraces, many now more than a century old and some still under their original slate. Roofs like these can give good service for a long time, but nails, battens, flashings and chimneys all wear out eventually. We inspect before recommending anything, tell you honestly whether a repair or a new roof makes more sense, and put our price in writing.
Walton's Terraced Streets
Much of Walton was built up in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the terraces from that period still define it, from plain two-up, two-down rows to larger bay-fronted houses. Goodison Park, opened in 1892, sits right among them. Among the terraced streets off County Road, Rice Lane and Walton Vale are later semis, council housing and newer infill.
A typical Walton terrace has natural slate front and rear slopes, a chimney stack shared with the house next door, and a rear outrigger under its own smaller roof. Many of those rear roofs have been extended or rebuilt over the years, often with flat roofs.
Common Roof Problems on Walton Terraces
Slipped slates and nail fatigue
As slate nails corrode, slates start to slide out of place, usually a few at a time. Refixing them is a reasonable repair while the problem is limited; once it is happening across the whole roof, re-slating is normally better value.
Sagging roofs
Some terraces were re-covered decades ago in concrete tiles, which are heavier than slate, and on an old roof structure that extra weight can contribute to sagging or spreading. A dip in the roof line is not always dangerous, but it should be looked at. Our article on why roofs sag or bow explains the causes.
Shared chimneys
Loose pots, cracked flaunching and open joints let water into the stack and down into chimney breasts, and a shared stack needs looking after on both sides. See our chimney stack repairs.
Outriggers and back extensions
The valley or flashing where a rear roof meets the main house is one of the most common sources of leaks on a terrace, often showing as damp in a back bedroom or bathroom.
Re-Roofing a Terraced House
When a Walton roof has reached the end of its life, re-roofing usually means stripping the old covering, renewing the battens and fitting a breathable membrane, then re-covering in natural slate or another suitable material. It is also the moment to deal with chimneys, leadwork and ventilation in one go. On a terrace, scaffolding usually stands on the pavement, which normally needs a licence from Liverpool City Council, and the junctions with your neighbours’ roofs need careful detailing.
Replacing more than 25% of the covering counts as renovating a thermal element, so loft insulation usually has to be brought up to current standards where technically and economically feasible, and the work must be notified to Building Control. Our roof replacement page explains the process.
Landlords, Lofts and Building Work
We work for landlords and letting agents in Walton as well as owner-occupiers.
Because we are roofers and builders, we also handle the work around the roof: rear extensions, steelwork, internal refurbishment and loft conversions. On a terraced house, permitted development allows up to 40 m³ of extra roof space, subject to conditions. A loft conversion will still need Building Regulations approval, and with a party wall on each side of a mid-terrace, the Party Wall etc. Act 1996 will usually apply.
Emergency Roof Repairs in Walton
If wind has brought slates down, a chimney pot is loose or water is coming through a ceiling, call 0151 739 0669. Our emergency line is available 24/7. If it can be done safely, we weatherproof the damaged area first and come back for the full repair. After storm damage, photograph what you can and tell your insurer; we can put together a written report, photos and a quote to support the claim. More on our emergency roofing page.

I had an issue with my flashing so had six roofers out to quote... John was the only one of the six who seemed genuine and trustworthy. This turned out to be the case... he did the work for a fair price, gave a proper invoice with breakdown of work, communicated well and left it all tidy. One of the firms who quoted said we needed a new roof (we didn't). It's so important to get several quotes and trust your gut. Thank you!Posted on Google![]()

Roofer and Builder have just completed gutter and rain pipe replacement around our whole house. They were a delight to deal with - friendly, helpful and very efficient. The work was done by a team of five in a single day and was to a high standard. They cleaned up carefully on completing the work. Maybe not the cheapest but probably the best.Posted on Google![]()

I cannot recommend John and his team enough. I had water leaking through my ceiling after a storm (3 days before Christmas!). John and his team were able to attend the same day. John was very knowledgable, assessed and explained the damage with photographs, and gave me repair options on other problems that were found. The team completed all the work the same day and really went above and beyond to do a great job rather than just a patch up. They've saved me a lot of stress and were pleasant and professional to deal with throughout. I will be contacting John again for future work.Posted on Google![]()

We had a problem that had been going on for years with various people trying to repair it and failing. Last December John came and repaired the roof. The materials used were 1st class, I have photos of every stage of the operation and after rain of biblical proportions I can now safely say that the roof is sound and my house is drying out. I can’t even begin to express my gratitude and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anybody. Thank you
FAQs
Roofing Questions from Walton
Is it worth keeping the slate on my Walton terrace?
If the slates themselves are sound, often yes. Natural slate can outlast several sets of nails and battens, so good slates can be refixed or reused when a roof is re-laid, topped up with matching reclaimed or new slate. Where many slates are cracked, flaking or thin, new slate or another suitable covering may be better value.
Can you repair just my side of a shared roof?
Yes. Each house in a terrace is usually repaired separately, and we detail the junction with next door’s roof so it stays watertight. It still helps to tell your neighbours before work starts, especially if scaffolding will cross the front of their house or the work affects a shared chimney stack or party wall.
Do you work for landlords with several properties in Walton?
Yes. Rental properties are part of our work alongside owner-occupied homes and commercial premises. Each job gets an inspection, a clear explanation of what we found and a written quotation, so you can prioritise repairs across your properties.
Do you cover Orrell Park, Fazakerley and Anfield?
Yes. As well as Walton, we cover Orrell Park, Fazakerley, Anfield, Kirkdale, Aintree and Bootle from our base in Maghull. Quotes are free and without obligation.
